Marketing Feel A Little Like David and Goliath?

When you run your own business, it’s extremely easy to think that where marketing is concerned, it is like David and Goliath. Big businesses have huge budgets, like the 6 million John Lewis spent on their Christmas ads and the small fortune Coca-Cola spend each year, on branded trucks and teams with promotional clothing and products. Going around the country to visit huge crowds at Coca-Cola Christmas. They have large teams, many communication techniques, and a large audience.

It can feel like the smaller business has no chance, of ever being heard. Like a mouse trying to roar with lions.

But instead of thinking about how you can compete with the larger companies, which may not be achievable. As a small business, you have the advantage of being agile and being able to adapt to things quickly, which a larger business cannot. So instead of trying to do the same, it may be more effective, just to be different.

Whilst you may not have a huge team who have many marketing qualifications, you do have the opportunity to let people into your business and let them know about you and what you do. Which is often something a large business cannot do.

You can show people, what is at the heart of your business and how you are different. You can tell them your story and why you are passionate, about what you do. You can be more personal and show them that you appreciate their business and why you will not ever take them for granted.

If you are not sure what to do then go on a course or join a group where you can learn. It really is worth doing, as showing your voice and your passion is really something only you can do best.

So instead of thinking about what you cannot do, start thinking about what you can do. If you want to make a short video on your phone with a few tips, you can. You don't need to go through a wide range of meetings and reports, you can just do it. If you want to react to something that happens in your industry you can, pretty much straight away. How cool is that!

At the end of the day, people are interested in finding out about people. That is why most programs are about people and relationships. We are social animals and want to be part of a group.  So make the most of this and let people in. It will make you unique as only you, can be you.
